The increase, to $29.91 billion, or 4.92 percent of the CMBS universe, marked the first time since September 2020 that the volume of loans in the hands of the industry’s special servicers had increased. The jump was due in large part to the transfer of a large loan against a portfolio of apartment properties. Also transferring were a number of loans against shopping malls that have matured or are coming due soon.
